The day after... let's not forget them!

It's easy to remember and honor our veterans and service men and women on Veteran's Day. But what about the next day? The next month?? Especially during the holidays...

The Red Cross is partnering with Pitney Bowes this holiday season for the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. They are collecting holiday cards to distribute to American service members, veterans and their families in the United States and around the world. Pitney Bowes is generously donating technology, resources and postage to make this holiday card program possible.

Their goal is to collect and distribute one million holiday cards to spread holiday cheer and facilitate thanks to these brave individuals and families.

Please send cards to this address:

Holiday Mail for Heroes
PO Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

There are very specific guidelines which must be followed when participating. Please go here to see these guidelines.

Phone cards, gift cards and care packages are all ways for individuals, families, and school, civic, social or church organizations to get involved in remembering our U.S. service members this holiday season.

Phone and gift cards help our troops stay in touch with family and loved ones as well as allowing them to purchase items they need. Those wishing to send calling cards or gift cards/certificates should go to the Army and Airforce Exchange Service website, scroll down to "AAFES Community Connection" and click on "Help Our Troops Call Home" or "Gift Cards/Certificates for Our Troops" in order to send such items. (Phone cards or gift cards will not be accepted with the holiday cards.)

Those wishing to send care packages should go to the America Supports You website and click under "Homefront Groups" to find out how to send care packages.

There are deadline for participating in these wonderful programs - many much earlier than you'd expect. Don't allow procrastination to keep you from participating!

And that, my fellow Americans, works for me! To see more Works For Me Wednesday ideas, please visit Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer.

(Please note: There is currently an email circulating which solicits Christmas cards for wounded soldiers at the Walter Reed Medical Center. For the protection of our service men and women, the U.S. Postal system will not accept any letters or packages addressed to "Any Service Member" or "Any Wounded Service Member." The falsehood of these types of email requests can be verified at Snopes.)

So neat to see that there are several organizations working to bless our soldiers! Thanks for letting us know about the one you found, too!

It so cool how there are so many organizations that we can choose from to participate in. I remember a couple of years ago being 'in charge' of the care pkgs to about 30 soldiers our church was sponsoring. I took all of them to the PO around 11:30. The lady looked at me and turned to another worker and said, "I'm going to lunch!" and someone else had to check in all the boxes. It took nearly an hour to get it done.
It was neat because all the soldiers were so surprised at getting a box from people they didn't even know.
Thanks for the sites.
God bless,
Brenda :)

There are so many organizations doing things for the servicemen and women. I haven't heard of this one. Thank you for making us aware.

Dawn Honey, you have a heart of gold. This is a wonderful idea and it is just like you to get behind it. I have A LOT of Christmas cards that I will never use. This may be just the thing that the kids and I can do together one Saturday afternoon.

I hope that you are enjoying the time with Bud!

Love you sweetie.

Wonderful idea! Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I know it makes a person feel good to send something to a soldier.

One year, the kids and I sent a Christmas care package to soldier in the Navy who was stationed on a ship. He was so touched by the items we picked out to send him. Even a Christmas wreath to hang over his berth. We kept in touch by email and could just picture the grin on his face as he typed us his "thank you".

Love you!

Hey Dawn, thanks for the info. Our kiddos' school usually does a couple of things throughout the year, but this sounds perfect for the Christmas season!

Many blessings!

I found out about the job through a friend. She has lead on several work at home jobs.

Yes, you can order an autographed copy. No problem.

Believe it or not, I actually did post twice to give Veterans their much-deserved more-than-one-day recognition. THANK YOU for this information!
