Confessions: Laundry

Before we discuss laundry, let me be perfectly honest with you.

This is not my laundry basket. How do we know this?

First, we don't have a dog. (My cat could totally take this dog.)

Second, the laundry in the basket is folded. Mine is rarely folded. And by rarely I mean never.

Finally...

See the floor? The one without any dog hair despite the fact that a dog obviously lives in this house? My floor is not that clean. Ever. (Hello? I have two children and a cat!)

Now that I've gotten that cleared up, let's talk about laundry.

I hate it.

The problem with laundry doesn't start with the sorting. I don't mind that. Or the washing. Or even the drying. It's all the steps that come after the first three. You know - the folding, the hanging up and, mostly... the putting away of the clean clothes.

I make promises to myself quite often about this laundry situation.

"I promise this week will be different. I will keep up with the laundry."

Sometimes I successfully make it to Tuesday with this goal!

So, I have a question for all of you.

How many of you will be honest enough to admit that your family selects their clothes from the laundry basket each morning?

I'm not alone in this, right?

how about from the pile on the floor of the laundry room directly in front of the dryer...when for the last 3 days your child has been complaining that he can't get dressed because he has no clean socks, and for the last 3 days you've been searching for (semi)matching pairs in said pile, and/or shaking out wrinkled pants/shirts/sweaters...no, I have no idea what you're talking about...

I do get boys asking if they have any clean clothes downstairs, but I'm sure that's just laziness speaking, since their bedrooms' are upstairs, and they're down when they ask. (whew - that was confusing)

I get hung up all the way around with laundry. The sorting, the leaving the wet clothes in the washer too long... it just doesn't end. The good part is, my boys have learned to grab their own piles of folded clothes and put them away... they just don't know how to fold them neatly in their drawers when the piles fall over. (sigh)

You're not alone.

That's my old dog! Molly May. And yeah, I admit, my kids sometimes dig clothes out of the basket waiting to get folded. But because they are too lazy to go upstairs and get a new change of clothes for the FOURTH time that day (I love that there is mud outside, but really... it can be so maddening!)

This one is finally not a problem..I have three kids who can help and they do.

I over see of course~ and I don't feel guilty since they are the culprits who dirty everything up.

you know your two will eventually be in college..will you be doing their laundry then?
If not then there's no time like the present to "sort this out"..

Come'on mom you deserve this!

I hate to do the laundry also, but it's not too bad because there are only the two of us. When the kids were home I taught them how to do laundry.

I'm actually the opposite. I don't really mind the folding and the putting away...I don't like the actual washing and drying. That might partly be because my washer and dryer are in the garage!

I am so with you on this one...well,at least for the first part. I don't mind the sorting, the washing, the drying - but that's where we part ways...I don't mind the folding. It's the putting away I hate with a passion.

It was several years ago when oldest child made some snide comment (he was all of 7, maybe) that went something like "mom, where are my clean clothes?" I realized he erroneously believed there was a laundry fairy that did the laundry and it magically appeared in his drawer/closet whilst he was off playing - doing his own thing. Since then, they each get their clean laundry returned to their room, folded and in the basket. They have to put it away...within 24 hours. The time requirement was created to teach them to show respect for the person who lovingly makes sure they have clean, folded, ironed clothes. (Let's not talk about how much I HATE ironing)...

no, you're not entirely alone...

This is hard for me too! At times I do pull clothes from the basket because the children have their favorite clothes. I am on a mission to alway get the laundry put up. Monday is laundry day at our house. I have it all put up so far. ;) I think hell is piles and piles of laundry. ;)

Not only do we pick our clothes out of the dryer, if I leave them on the couch Mabel feels free to nest in them. And then I have to rewash. It's a vicious cycle in our house!

Yup, clothes surfing in the dryer and laundry basket here., too. AND the baskets are usually in the basement which is no where nearly as nice as the picture you've got!

LOVE this post.

If laundry were up to me, my family would be selecting their daily wardrobe from the dirty laundry pile.

In three weeks though, I trade in my home schooling hat for the laundry hat.

Look for a post or two. I'm sure it won't come naturally.

That is TOTALLY me. We can wash the clothes and dry them. Then they sit (clean) in the middle of the living room for DAYS. The kids just go rifling through them to find their clothes. Cuz everything ends up in there!

I thought when my kids left the house it would be easy......NOT! I still get behind!

May I take one moment to gripe about Google Reader? I was a better commenter BEFORE I used it. I read this post a LONG time ago and didn't comment. Boo on me.

OK.

YES I hate laundry and YES my family lives out of clothes baskets at times. I got every bit of our laundry washed this week and not a bit of it folded (sore shoulder was my excuse).

I don't even do socks anymore. I put them in a basket once they are clean and the kids dig through and get their socks. How sick is that?

Don't feel bad about laundry. You are fabulous regardless of the status of you laundry.

Ha! My daughter needs to meet you, you two could easily mind meld and eat an icecream together over the similarities.
What fun. Fortunately for me, my kids are gone and my husband really does do the majority of the laundry and folds clothes to boot. The dog hair though does adorn our house and our Olde English Bully Dogge would crush the laundry basket if she didn't eat it first.
